Only you can add a child, and only you can see their data.

Your child never has an account, password, or email with Backpack. Everything about them lives under your parent account, visible only to you.

We collect five things. Here is the whole list.

The name you type, an age band, a buddy character, which approved videos were watched and for how long, and the playback settings you choose. Nothing else — no photos, voice, location, or anything your child types.

Never sold, never used for ads, never used to profile your child.

We use your child's information for exactly one thing: running the service you asked for. Deleting the profile deletes all of it, immediately.

You can review, export, change, or delete it at any time.

Everything is on the profile page, and Account → Export my data gives you a file with all of it. Questions go to privacy@backpack.kids and get a human reply.

Before you add a child

Effective date: September 9, 2026.

Backpack is a service for children, and United States law (the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, "COPPA") requires us to tell you exactly what we will collect about your child, and to get your permission first. This notice is that. Please read it — it is short, and it is specific.

Who we are

Backpack is operated by Gigahertz Company LLC, an Illinois limited liability company. You can reach the person responsible for children's privacy at privacy@backpack.kids. We answer every message to that address.

What we collect about your child

When you create a profile for your child, we store:

The name you enter. A first name or nickname is enough — we never ask for a full name, and we recommend not entering one.
An age band you choose: 3–5, 6–8, or 9–12. We do not collect a birth date.
A buddy character and its name, chosen in the app.
Which videos your child watches, and for how long. Each time your child plays a video we record which video, how many seconds were watched, and whether it was finished. This is how the parent dashboard shows you what your child has been watching.
Playback settings you set for the profile, such as auto-advance.

That is the complete list. We do not collect your child's photo, voice, location, contacts, messages, or anything typed by your child. Your child never has an account, password, or email address with us.

What we do with it

We use this information for one purpose: to run the service you asked for — showing your child only the videos you approved, and showing you what they watched. Specifically, we do not:

sell it, rent it, or share it with advertisers;
use it to build a profile of your child for any purpose;
show your child advertising of any kind;
use it to contact your child;
allow your child to make it public or share it with anyone.

Who else can see it

Video playback happens through YouTube's player, served from youtube-nocookie.com, Google's privacy-enhanced player. That player is made by Google, not by us, and it will know which video was played. It does not receive your child's name, age band, or profile. We do not use any other third-party analytics or tracking in your child's part of the app.

Our infrastructure providers (our database and hosting vendors) store this information on our behalf under contract and are not permitted to use it for anything else. A current list is in our Privacy Policy.

Your rights, and how to use them

At any time, from your parent account, you can:

Review everything we hold about your child — the profile page shows it, and Account → Export my data downloads all of it as a file.
Change the name, age band, buddy, and settings.
Delete the profile. Deleting a child's profile permanently deletes their viewing history and every other record about them, immediately.
Delete your entire account, which deletes every child profile with it.
Withdraw this consent by deleting the child's profile or emailing privacy@backpack.kids. Withdrawing consent means we can no longer provide the service for that child, and we will delete their information.

You do not have to agree to more collection than is needed for the service in order to use it, and we don't ask you to.

Your agreement

By selecting I agree, you confirm that you are the parent or legal guardian of the child you are about to add, and you consent to Backpack collecting and using your child's information exactly as described above. We will send a confirmation of this consent to the email address on your account.
