Notice to families
The notice your district sends when a classroom starts using Backpack Education.
This is the text of the letter a district sends to families under its own name once its superintendent approves it — by email, or on paper with a one-time code for a family without an email address on file. Families don't sign it; their receipt is recorded.
Dear families of [District],
This year, classrooms at [School] are using Backpack Education, a video learning service the district has reviewed and approved. We want to tell you what it is, what it collects, and what you can see.
What it is
Teachers choose short educational videos from a catalog the district has approved for kindergarten through fifth grade. Students watch them on classroom devices during lessons. There are no advertisements, no comments, no recommendations, and no way for a student to search or open a video the teacher has not chosen.
What it collects
Your child's first name and last initial, grade, school, and classes come from the district's student records. The service records which videos your child watched in class and when. It does not collect a photograph, birth date, address, location, or anything your child types. The provider does not advertise to students, does not build profiles, and may not sell or share this information.
What you can see
You may sign in to a guardian view at any time to see your child's classes, the collections their teachers have published, and what your child watched. You can also ask for a copy of your child's records or a correction, and you can choose to receive a short weekly summary by email. Use the link in the district's email, or the code on the paper copy, to sign in.
